For a patient with larger or protruding back ears, there are so many wonderful benefits from Otoplasty in Houston, including:

  • Can be performed at almost any age
  • Corrects prominent ears
  • Increases self-confidence
  • More natural facial appearance
  • Permanent results
  • Treatment is safe

Procedure

Ear Contouring, professionally referred to as Otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves your facial symmetry and creates a proportionate balance by adjusting the projection of your ear’s structure. Dr. Ahmadi utilizes multiple techniques to help you achieve facial harmony and treat the conditions or deformities that create self-doubt to improve your confidence and your overall appearance

Ideal Candidate

You could be a great candidate for Otoplasty in Houston if you possess the following characteristics:

  • Can stop taking certain medications (i.e. corticosteroids, NSAIDs, or MAOIs) for at least a few weeks before surgery
  • Have concerns about the appearance of your ears
  • In overall good health
  • Maintain realistic expectations with the results
  • Nonsmoker

This procedure is great for people of all ages but is a very popular choice for younger patients because their cartilage is easier to shape and manipulate. While this procedure can be performed on patients as young as five years old, we do encourage patients to wait for smaller children as they still have the opportunity to grow. If you have any questions regarding your or your child’s eligibility for Otoplasty, please call Avante Plastic Surgery so that we can help you decide your next step.

Surgical Techniques

Ear Pinning

Ear pinning is a minimally invasive Otoplasty technique used to bring protruding ears closer to the head. Dr. Ahmadi may use sutures to reposition the cartilage without removing skin or cartilage, or he may create a small incision behind the ear to remove excess tissue and reshape the cartilage. Permanent sutures secure the new position for long-lasting results.

Although commonly performed on children around ages five to six, adults can also benefit from this procedure to enhance their appearance.

Ear Keloid

Ear keloids are firm, rubbery nodules that form on the earlobes, most often after mild trauma such as piercings or more significant injury. While small scars may respond to steroid or fluorouracil injections, more severe keloids often require surgical correction or fat grafting, which can improve the quality of the underlying tissue. Larger or symptomatic keloids—those causing itching or pain—often need multiple treatments.

Because every patient’s tissue and scarring are different, keloid care must be customized. Some cases can be treated in a single stage, while others require a series of surgical or non-surgical steps. Dr. Ahmadi will determine the best approach to help you achieve optimal results.

EarLobe Repair

This technique fixes an earlobe that has been torn or stretched due to pierced or damaged ears, or some traumatic event. This procedure consists of sealing up the split parts using a zig-zag pattern which reinforces and prevents the earlobes from splitting the same way again. A small wound dressing is often applied at the end of the surgery to help protect against infection.

Expectations

On the day of your Otoplasty, you’ll start in the pre-operative area, where you’ll meet the nursing and anesthesia team and review the plan with Dr. Ahmadi, who will make sure you or your child feel fully informed and comfortable before the procedure. Based on your consultation, anesthesia may be local, general, or IV sedation to ensure the safest and most comfortable experience.

After the procedure, Dr. Ahmadi will evaluate the results and ensure you or your child are stable before moving to the recovery area. An ear dressing will be applied and removed the following day. All Otoplasty surgeries are outpatient, so patients return home the same day with clear aftercare instructions and medication. That evening, Dr. Ahmadi’s team will check in to make sure you or your child are recovering well and to answer any questions.

Recovery

After being released, you or your child can return home to recover, but it’s important to have someone available to drive and assist during the first 24 hours. Recovery typically takes one to two weeks, with bruising and swelling gradually improving. Mild discomfort is normal, and Dr. Ahmadi will prescribe medication to help manage symptoms. Most patients feel ready to return to work or school within seven to ten days.

Proper aftercare is essential to protect your results and ensure smooth healing. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise for the first month and heavy lifting for at least three weeks. To prevent disrupting the healing ears, avoid “pull-over” clothing and hard or chewy foods. With careful aftercare, most patients are cleared to resume contact sports after about six weeks.

Cost

The exact cost of an Otoplasty in Houston will depend on the extent of correction and the individual patient, among other various factors. During your consultation with Dr. Ahmadi, he will go over the procedure and develop your plan. Once this surgical plan is made, our Patient Coordinator can provide you with a complete pricing breakdown.

Otoplasty FAQs

Is Otoplasty Painful?

Otoplasty surgery isn’t considered to be a painful procedure because it’s performed under anesthesia, and is much more bearable when compared to other procedures. Patients will sometimes express feelings of discomfort because of the bandage that helps reduce swelling and preserve healing. Dr. Ahmadi can also prescribe some temporary pain medication to make the first stage of your recovery more bearable, and we will also provide you with some directions that will help to alleviate the pain or discomfort you may experience.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

After your surgery, Dr. Ahmadi will need you to return after a week so that he may evaluate your recovery and remove any sutures or bandages. After your first check-up, you can expect to return a few more times with an average of four and six follow-up appointments. These will usually take place around one week, three weeks, six weeks, three months, and six months.

How Long Until I See Results?

Most patients can see immediate results, however, your ears will still be swollen, bruised, and still settling into position. You should notice your final, optimal results in about three months when your ears are fully healed.

Can I Combine Otoplasty With Other Procedures?

Absolutely! Many of our Houston Otoplasty patients will combine their surgery with other facial contouring procedures to create a better profile, such as Rhinoplasty, Chin Augmentation, or Neck Lift. For you to make the best decisions for your aesthetic goals, please mention them to Dr. Ahmadi during your consultation. He will be able to use his experience and expert eye to make the best recommendations for you.
