About

Breast reduction addresses the functional and anatomical challenges that come with excessively heavy breast tissue. When the breasts place disproportionate strain on the spine, shoulders, and chest wall, you may experience chronic pain, skin irritation beneath the folds, posture changes, and difficulty with exercise or daily movement. Overdeveloped glandular tissue, excess fat, and stretched skin can contribute to this imbalance.

A breast reduction removes and reshapes the excess breast tissue, skin, and fat to create lighter, more proportional breasts that complement your frame. At Avante Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ahmadi uses carefully planned incisions and precise internal reshaping to reduce your weight, elevate the breast position, and improve symmetry. The procedure not only refines the breast footprint on the chest but also alleviates the physical burden to help you feel more comfortable.

Benefits

Breast reduction offers meaningful relief and restores balance to your body by addressing the weight and volume that limit your comfort and daily function. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Reduced strain on your neck, back, and shoulders
  • Improved posture and overall mobility
  • Relief from skin irritation and rashes beneath the breasts
  • Greater comfort during exercise and physical activity
  • Better-fitting clothing and expanded wardrobe options
  • A lighter, more proportionate breast shape
  • Enhanced symmetry and refined breast contours
  • Increased confidence and ease in daily movement

Procedure

Your breast reduction begins with detailed anatomical mapping to determine exactly how much tissue needs to be removed and where support must be restored. After you receive anesthesia, Dr. Ahmadi creates strategic incisions, typically a periareolar incision with a vertical limb, and, when necessary, an inframammary fold incision, to access the deep breast tissue. These allow him to separate the skin from the glandular tissue and define the reduction pattern.

During surgery, excess glandular tissue, fatty tissue, and stretched skin are removed in measured increments to ensure symmetry. The remaining breast tissue is reshaped into a compact, lifted mound, and your nipple-areola complex is brought to a more elevated, natural point on the chest. The internal structures are reshaped to create long-lasting support. Incisions are then closed to encourage smooth healing and minimize visible scarring.

Candidates

Breast reduction can be an excellent option if you’re experiencing physical or lifestyle limitations due to excessively heavy breasts. You may be a strong candidate if:

  • You struggle with chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain linked to breast weight
  • You notice shoulder grooving from bra straps despite proper support
  • You experience recurrent rashes, moisture, or skin irritation beneath the breast fold
  • You feel restricted during exercise or daily activities because of your breast size
  • You have difficulty finding clothing or bras that fit comfortably
  • You maintain overall good health and have no uncontrolled medical conditions
  • You are a non-smoker or willing to stop smoking before and after surgery
  • You understand the procedure, recovery, and scarring, and have realistic expectations

Recovery

Your recovery begins immediately after surgery, when you’re placed in a supportive surgical bra to reduce swelling and protect the newly shaped tissues. Within the first 48 to 72 hours, you can expect pressure, tightness, and controlled discomfort, accompanied by bruising and moderate swelling. Most patients return to desk-based work within 7 to 10 days, though you’ll need to avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 to 10 pounds during this time. Over the next several weeks, you will need to follow specific aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing. You must wear your compression garment continuously, keep incisions clean and dry, sleep on your back with your upper body elevated, and attend your scheduled follow-up visits. Light walking is encouraged starting day one, but strenuous activity must be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. As your incisions mature, you’ll also be guided on scar care measures.

Results

You’ll notice an immediate reduction in breast weight and volume, but your final shape becomes clearer as swelling decreases over the first 6 to 8 weeks. You may notice subtle refinements for several months as the tissues settle and the incisions mature. Once healed, your results are long-lasting, especially if you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. While natural aging still occurs, the improved proportions generally remain stable for many years.
