About

Your nose is made up of delicate cartilage, bone, and soft tissue that work together to support breathing and create facial balance. Age, genetics, trauma, or structural deviations can alter these relationships, leading to concerns such as a prominent hump, asymmetry, a widened tip, or obstruction that limits airflow. When these anatomical elements fall out of harmony, your overall facial appearance and breathing ability can be affected.

Rhinoplasty is a highly technical surgical procedure that reshapes the nasal framework to improve form and/or function. Dr. Ahmadi carefully adjusts bone and cartilage to refine the bridge, lift or support the nasal tip, narrow the width, straighten deviations, or open obstructed passages. Each maneuver is tailored to your anatomy, ensuring a precise and natural-looking outcome that respects both structural integrity and your overall facial proportions.

Benefits

Rhinoplasty offers both cosmetic and functional improvements, giving you a nose that feels as good as it looks. Once Dr. Ahmadi tailors the procedure to your anatomy, you can experience meaningful changes such as:

  • Smoothing a dorsal hump for a more refined profile
  • Narrowing or reshaping the bridge to enhance symmetry
  • Refining a bulbous or drooping nasal tip for better definition
  • Straightening nasal structures to improve airflow
  • Correcting deviations or post-traumatic changes
  • Creating a better balance between your nose and overall facial features

Procedure

During your rhinoplasty, you will first receive general anesthesia. Dr. Ahmadi begins by creating either a closed incision hidden inside the nostrils or a small open incision across the columella to provide full visibility of your nasal framework. He lifts the skin and soft tissue layer to expose the underlying cartilage, bone, and septum. Using fine surgical instruments, he may shave excess bone to smooth a hump, narrow wide nasal bones, reshape or suture-refine tip cartilages, and straighten your septum to improve airflow.

If your nose lacks support, Dr. Ahmadi may harvest cartilage from the septum, or, in more complex cases, from the ear or rib, to rebuild weak areas or strengthen the nasal valves. After reshaping is complete, he re-drapes the skin, closes the incisions with delicate sutures, and applies a firm external splint to stabilize your new structure.

Candidates

Rhinoplasty is best suited for individuals seeking meaningful improvement in nasal shape or function while maintaining realistic expectations. If you’re considering this procedure, you may be an ideal candidate if:

  • You are bothered by the size, shape, or proportions of your nose
  • You have a drooping, bulbous, or asymmetric nasal tip
  • You feel your nose lacks harmony with your other facial features
  • You experience breathing difficulties due to structural issues
  • You have a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse
  • You are seeking correction after nasal trauma or previous surgery
  • You are in good overall health with no uncontrolled medical conditions
  • You do not smoke or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • You understand the recovery process and have realistic expectations about outcomes

Recovery

In the first week of your recovery, you can expect swelling, congestion, pressure, and mild bruising around the eyes. Your external splint typically stays in place for 5 to 7 days, and if internal supports were used, they are removed at your follow-up appointment. You’ll need to avoid blowing your nose, bending, and strenuous activity to prevent bleeding. Sleeping with your head elevated helps reduce swelling, and cold compresses can ease discomfort.

As you move into weeks two and three, most bruising fades, and the majority of swelling begins to subside, allowing you to return to work and engage in light daily activities. You’ll need to avoid heavy exercise for 3 to 4 weeks and protect your nose from accidental impact. Dr. Ahmadi provides detailed instructions on cleaning incisions and monitoring your healing process.

Types

Primary Rhinoplasty

Primary rhinoplasty is performed when you are undergoing nasal surgery for the first time. Dr. Ahmadi carefully evaluates your bone, cartilage, skin thickness, and airway anatomy to design a plan that balances aesthetics with structural integrity. During surgery, he reshapes the cartilage, adjusts the bridge, refines the tip, or narrows the nose as needed, all while preserving support. The goal is to achieve a natural-looking outcome that complements your facial features.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is meant for patients who have undergone previous nasal surgery but are dissatisfied with their results or have developed functional issues. Since scar tissue, weakened cartilage, or asymmetries make these cases more complex, Dr. Ahmadi may use cartilage grafts from the septum, ear, or rib to rebuild structural support. This procedure corrects deformities, restores balance, and improves breathing while aiming for a more stable outcome.

Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional rhinoplasty focuses primarily on correcting breathing problems caused by internal nasal obstruction. This may include a deviated septum, collapsed nasal valves, enlarged turbinates, or trauma-related structural changes. Dr. Ahmadi uses techniques such as septoplasty, valve repair, and targeted cartilage grafting to reinforce your airway while maintaining or enhancing nasal aesthetics, which helps improve breathing and comfort.

Results

You’ll begin to notice early improvements once your splint is removed, although swelling, especially around the tip, will take time to subside. By 6 to 8 weeks, your nose will look more defined, and you can appreciate a clearer sense of your new contour. Full refinement continues for 9 to 12 months. With proper care, your rhinoplasty results can last a lifetime.
